Following the Light

Light glistening on the snowy banks of a river, illuminating trees, reflecting on water—no matter where he is painting, Tom Lockhart looks to the light, inspired by its brilliant, dramatic impact on the land. “I’m fascinated by the light—soft, warm, or bright—and how it affects the subject,” he says.

Exceptionally talented at using light to showcase the natural beauty of the world, Lockhart captures the attention of viewers, urging them to share his wonder at what he sees before him, whether it’s the Rocky Mountains, the Grand Canyon, waterways, or farmlands. “I try to convey a sense of mood, a sense of serenity or peace,” Lockhart says. “I want people to have a sense of the place, to feel like they belong there, can’t wait to go there.”

“This dirt road is quite treacherous at certain times of the year. Looking out towards the Rampart Range, home to Pikes Peak, I came across this beautiful sunrise, while traveling along this road on my way to paint over in the Wet Mountain Valley.”

“Many times, I’ve painted along the back roads of the West and Southwest. This was done from a plein air piece I painted many years ago. I returned again several years later to familiarize myself with the scene. It hadn’t changed then, but I’m grateful for the reference I’ve taken over the years.”
