You could say that William Alther’s journey to becoming a professional artist was the result of his answering the call of the wild. Although the Colorado-based painter has been fascinated by God’s wild creatures from early childhood, time and other career commitments would intervene before he eventually turned to paint and canvas to bring them to life.
Despite making a commitment to art less than a decade ago, the 55-year-old artist says it has always played a significant role in his life.

“Red foxes surely have to be high on the all-time list of commonly painted wild animals. That’s fine with me. As a motif, a red fox in snow is pretty hard to beat. I will be surprised if I ever tire of painting them.”

“I enjoyed arranging and working with the varied planes of fractured, snow-covered ice in this painting. It is surprising how dark the gray, blue, and violet surfaces of snow can get in certain light conditions. Polar bears are usually decidedly ‘un-white,’ as well. They can appear to be anything from dark ochre to brilliant yellow in low-angled warm sunlight.”
