Twenty-two years ago, while driving from a workshop in Wyoming to her home in California, Amery Bohling took a detour and stopped at the Grand Canyon. She had visited the natural wonder when she was 12, and wanted to revisit it as an adult. That spur-of-the-moment decision was to have a major impact on Bohling and her art.
It was October, a busy time at the canyon, but she was able to get a room at the lodge on the North Rim for one night—the last night of the season. She spent the day, taking photos and sitting on the porch doing several plein air studies. That day was heavenly and proved to be a turning point for Bohling who, at the time, was painting landscapes and seascapes. She took those studies home and used them to create paintings, and took them to a gallery where they quickly sold.
And so began Bohling’s love affair with the Grand Canyon. In fact, she’s not only been capturing its beauty since then, she also had some of her wedding photos taken there when she got married in 2020. She finds the canyon endlessly fascinating—from its timeless rocks and the radiant quality of the light and sky to its dazzling colors.
