…And Everything Nice

This piece is the first in a series of paintings I’ve done portraying the act of a woman getting ready. So much thought and time goes into a woman’s appearance, unlike men, who just put on some pants and a shirt and are ready to go. For women, it’s almost more of a ceremonial ritual, one that I find intriguing and beautiful.

This sweet little painting is of my youngest daughter. I needed a period piece for a gallery show that was rapidly approaching. I dressed her up in a pioneer outfit, and we went out to pick some sunflowers. It was an overcast day, and the light wasn’t very inspiring. We returned to the studio and, as I was putting things away, she sat down and started pulling the petals off the flowers she had picked. I quickly snapped a few pictures and ended up getting some very delightful reference.
