For more than two decades, California-based artist Calvin Liang has been inspired by the majestic beauty found along the Pacific coastline, so it is not surprising that billowy sail boats, rosetinged sunsets, misty coves, and secluded beaches continue as favorite subjects for his impressionistic, yet slightly stylized, oil paintings.

Spider Rock is one of the most striking natural landmarks in Canyon de Chelly in eastern Arizona. I wanted to capture the large scale and depth of the environment and the air that filled it. The warm sun, harmonizing the scene, was moving quickly and was my first focus in the painting.
