Andre Kohn’s art teachers at Auburn University figured out quite quickly that he was not a typical student. His drawing and painting skills were already so well developed that they told him to come to class only on the first and last days of the semester. “They said that there was nothing they could teach me,” Kohn says.
His English teachers, however, saw much more of Kohn. “I stayed in English 090 for five quarters before I passed,” he admits. “That was much harder for me.”
Kohn enrolled at Auburn at the age of 20, shortly after arriving in the United States from Russia. He had already completed three years at the University of Moscow, where he was studying to become an art teacher. Although it was a grueling schedule—he was expected to take 15 classes each quarter and to study six days a week—he was honored to be working with masters of Russian art at such a well-respected university. “It was a privilege to be there,” he says. “It laid the foundation for my entire career.”

At the Milliner’s
Oil
24″x24″
“This particular series gives me an opportunity to express my deep appreciation for women’s hats—their endless designs throughout history and, of course, the milliners, especially the genuine ones, who still believe in quality and handmade accessories. This piece was inspired by a boutique at the very picturesque, charming, and enchanting town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.”

Cold Morning on the Ranch
Oil
20″x20″
“Rarely would the Phoenix, Arizona, area get snow. However, when it does, it’s a day for me to watch my favorite and authentic ranch owners do their thing, just like their ancestors have done for more than 100 years, no matter what the weather. A few more layers of clothes, but often the same hat.”
